The Application and Advantages of 3-Axis CNC Cutting Machines in Vacuum Forming

In the vacuum forming production process, CNC cutting is a crucial step. It ensures the final shape and dimensional accuracy of the product while significantly improving production efficiency and product quality. In this article, we will delve into the application of 3-axis CNC cutting machines in the vacuum forming field, helping you better understand their working principles and benefits.

Basic Information About CNC Cutting Equipment

CNC, short for Computer Numerical Control, is a technology controlled by computers to perform cutting and processing. After the extrusion, molding, and vacuum forming processes of plastic sheets, the CNC cutting step follows. Once the product is formed, our CNC engineers convert 3D files into dedicated CNC files, program the data, then remove excess material from the outside, and complete the shaping, drilling, and beveling of the product in this step.

We have a total of 28 CNC machines, making us one of the companies with the largest number of CNC machining production facilities in China!

Application of 3-Axis CNC Cutting Machines

Currently, the popular CNC cutting machines on the market are mainly 3-axis CNC and 5-axis CNC. Compared to the 5-axis CNC, which has 360-degree high-speed rotating robotic arms that can cut products with more angles and curved surfaces, we mainly use 3-axis CNC to cut flat or simply curved surfaces.

Typically, our CNC engineers input the program, and the machine automatically operates to cut the shape of the product.

Basic Principles of 3-Axis CNC Cutting Machines

A 3-axis CNC cutting machine is a mechanical device controlled by a computer to perform cutting and processing. It uses three axes, X, Y, and Z, to move the cutting tool, allowing precise cutting and engraving in three directions. 3-axis CNC machines are usually used for planar processing, suitable for simple geometric shapes and contour cutting.

Application of 3-Axis CNC Cutting Machines in Vacuum Forming

Cutting and Trimming

Edge Cutting: 3-axis CNC machines can precisely cut the edges of vacuum-formed products, ensuring the dimensional accuracy and consistency of the products.

Trimming Excess Material: During the vacuum forming process, excess material often needs to be trimmed. 3-axis CNC machines can effectively remove these excess parts, bringing the product to its ideal shape.

Drilling and Engraving

Drilling: Many vacuum-formed products require drilling, such as screw holes and ventilation holes. 3-axis CNC machines can precisely drill at specified locations, ensuring that each hole’s position and size meet design requirements.

Engraving: For products that require detailed engraving, 3-axis CNC machines are equally competent. Whether it is text, patterns, or other complex designs, 3-axis CNC machines can efficiently complete them.

Efficient Production

Improving Production Efficiency: As 3-axis CNC machines can operate automatically, their cutting speed is fast and precise, significantly improving production efficiency.

Reducing Human Error: Traditional manual cutting inevitably involves errors, whereas 3-axis CNC machines, controlled by computers, can minimize human error to the greatest extent, ensuring the consistency of each product.

Wide Range of Applications

Various Materials: 3-axis CNC machines are suitable for processing various materials, including ABS, PE, PC, PMMA, ASA, PETG, PS, HIPS, etc. Regardless of the material, precise cutting and processing can be achieved by adjusting the equipment parameters.

Diverse Products: From automotive parts to consumer electronics, 3-axis CNC machines play an essential role in producing various vacuum-formed products.

Methods to Maintain Cutting Accuracy

Taking the 5-axis CNC equipment as an example, before using the 5-axis CNC to process cutting products, we make fiberglass molds or wooden molds. The surface shape of these molds matches the product’s shape, with vacuum drill holes and embedded magnets on one side of the mold. During the cutting process, the vacuum pump extracts the air between the mold and the product through the air holes on the mold’s top, and the magnets adhere to the product’s surface. Through the suction of the magnets and the vacuum pump, the product firmly attaches to the mold, ensuring accurate product cutting.

Conclusion

The application of 3-axis CNC cutting machines in the vacuum forming field is extensive. They not only improve the cutting precision and production efficiency of products but also reduce human error, enhancing product consistency and quality. For vacuum forming manufacturers, 3-axis CNC equipment is an essential and indispensable tool. We hope this article provides you with a deeper understanding of the application of 3-axis CNC machines in vacuum forming, enabling you to better apply them in actual production.
